  • Taking Care of Your Legs — Understanding What’s Inside

Posted on August 22nd, 2011 Patricia No comments

Do your legs ever hurt from walking or running? When you find out what’s inside of them you might understand why.

The leg contains three significant bones:
Femur or “thighbone” — a long bone in the upper leg, which supports the trunk. The femur is the longest and strongest bone of the body. Its upper end is attached to the pelvic bone in a ball-and-socket joint where its rounded end “the head” fits into the depression on the outside of the innominate bone or “hip bone.”

Tibia or “shinbone” — located in the back lower leg. The upper end of the tibia is attached to the lower end of the femur meeting in the knee joint. This joint is a hinge joint, which allows motion in one direction only. At this joint, cartilage forms something called buffers between these bones.

The Fibula — is smaller than the tibia and attached to it at the upper end.

The lower ends of the tibia and fibula meet the bones of the ankle to form the ankle joint.

The patella or “knee cap” covers and protects the knee joint. The thigh muscles are used to bend the knee, while the lower leg muscles provide movement to the feet and toes. The sciatic nerve, the longest and thickest in the body, furnishes the nervous system for nearly all of the leg. Blood flows into the thigh through the femoral artery, and back in the direction of the heart through two systems of veins, one deep, one superficial.

Our legs go through a lot of action daily because we are on them most of the day, even after we come home from work. Remember to be kind to your legs and try to give them a break every now and then. During the day take a minute or two to rest them and, when possible in the evenings, elevate them. Even a few minutes rest each day will mean healthy and stronger legs.
