A word on protein from a basketball strength and conditioning expert

Second only to water as the most abundant substance in the body, protein is essential for tissue growth and repair. Eight of the proteins necessary for health cannot be produced by the body, and must be acquired daily through diet. Meats contain all eight of these “essential” proteins, but meat is a poor energy source; usually contains a lot of fat; and is sometimes difficult to digest. To reduce consumption of animal protein you can add grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, and other vegetables to your diet. Although these sources each lack one or more of the essential amino acids, by combining them with limited servings of animal products, you should have no problem meeting the daily requirement for protein. However, if your diet consists of very little meat or if you’re a strict vegetarian, you should consult with a registered dietitian to be certain that you are eating the appropriate combinations of essential amino acids.
An athlete’s protein intake should not exceed 15% to 18% of his or her total caloric consumption.

Many athletes mistakenly believe that consuming excessive amounts of protein will contribute to massive growth of muscles. Eating even 10 to 15 times the recommended amount is not uncommon. Although athletes do require slightly higher amounts of protein than sedentary people, their protein intake should not exceed 15% to 18% of their total caloric consumption. As with carbohydrate and fat, the body can use only a limited amount of protein: the excess will be converted to and stored as fat.

You may order most reliable, effective, safe herbal supplements to help you stay beautiful and young, reduce weight, build muscle mass and also boost your sex drive.

A drug that interrupts the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells reduced colon tumor development by up to 80% when tested in mice, report US researchers.

The compound, called PD 184352, “blocked the growth of colon tumors implanted into mice without otherwise affecting the mice,” said study lead author Dr. Judith Sebolt-Leopold, an investigator at Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The findings are published in the July issue of the journal Nature Medicine.

PD 184352 belong to a family of chemicals called ‘MEK inhibitors.’ In an interview with Reuters Health, Sebolt-Leopold described MEK1 as an enzyme important to the ‘pathway’ of chemical signaling that drives uncontrolled growth, a characteristic feature of cancer cells. For years, she noted, scientists involved in the fight against cancer “have been trying to selectively interfere with this pathway to specifically block the ability of tumor cells to grow.”

Her team of researchers suspected that PD 184352 might block MEK1 activity, ‘short-circuiting’ the mechanisms behind uncontrolled cell growth. After promising results in the laboratory, the investigators tested the compound in mice implanted with colon cancer cells.

Closer investigation suggests that PD 184352 reduces both the growth and migration of cancer cells. Most cancer cells display the ability to metastasize, or ‘scatter’ outside the immediate range of the tumor, increasing the risk of cancer recurrence following surgery. However, according to the investigators, “the MEK inhibitor blocked the ability of the cells to scatter.”

The effectiveness of MEK inhibitors may not be limited to colon cancers. “Preliminary experiments carried out in vitro with lung and pancreatic tumors also showed sensitivity to this agent,” Sebolt-Leopold said.

Biopsy tests that assessed the vulnerability of individual cancers to MEK inhibitors could raise the odds of treatment success, according to the researcher. Ideally, such tests would “determine those patients who would most likely derive benefit from treatment with a MEK inhibitor,” the Michigan researcher explained.

Sebolt-Leopold calls the study findings “exciting.” She said research into the safety of PD 184352 and other MEK inhibitors continues, in preparation for future clinical trials.

Ordering discount prescription drugs from an internet pharmacy not only saves money, time but also present you the ease and convenience of obtaining remedies from home.

Those pesky ultraviolet (UV) rays. Not only can they cause skin cancer, they can make you look old and wrinkly, too. The American Cancer Society has been shouting loud and long about the importance of covering up and slathering on sunscreen.

“It really is about changing behaviors and that takes time. We’re not expecting that people completely change overnight, and I have a lot of empathy for that fact,” said Mary O’Connell, director of the Skin Cancer Prevention Program at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta, Ga. “But it doesn’t change the facts. Unprotected sun exposure can lead to skin cancers. As long as society places value on an even, dark tan, it’s going to be hard to get the message to stick. It’s more than just using sunscreen.”

And unfortunately, that’s the only part of the message that seems to be getting through.

“Behavioral scientists have done focus group research for us with adolescents and adults, and sunscreen seems to be their main measure of sun protection,” added Dr. Mona Saraiya, medical epidemiologist at the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. “They’re less likely to use the other options which really are the first line of defense: seeking shade, covering up, getting a hat, grabbing sun block and rubbing it on.”

To help drive the message home, the CDC launched its “Choose Your Cover” campaign on skin cancer awareness three years ago. The focus is to reach adolescents, encouraging them to take care of their skin before they get their first sunburns, which increases their likelihood of skin cancers in the future. Prompting the campaign was the agency’s national survey, which showed that only one-third of the United States’ white population actually did anything to protect themselves from the damaging effects of UV rays.

“I can tell you that even though the awareness is out there, it does not necessarily lead to behavioral changes. Look at cigarette smoking, for instance.” But, she adds, the news from down under is heartening. “In Australia, they’ve had a campaign in force for 20 years or more, and just now they’re beginning to document that the number of sunburns has decreased, and it’s affecting skin cancer rates.”

What You Can Do
Stay out of the sun between the peak hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., if possible.
If you do go out, cover up, put on a hat and use sunscreen as an added precaution, not your first and only line of defense.
Sunscreen gives a false sense of security and may also mask the fact that your skin is being exposed to too much sun. Ask yourself, if you hadn’t applied the sunscreen would you have already been burned?

Sunscreen is not recommended for babies less than 6 months old. They should be kept in the shade and loosely covered with clothing.
Check for moles that fall under the following ABCD guidelines:
Asymmetrical — One half of the mole doesn’t match the other.
Border — Edges are irregular, notched or blurred.

Color — Color is variegated, sometimes with differing shades of brown or black, and blue, white or red. Diameter — The area is the size of a pencil eraser or larger.

Avoid tanning beds and sun lamps, and wear sunglasses and lip balm with SPF protection.

If your members doubt the efficacy of making dietary changes to improve their health, you may want to mention the following study to them. The study, published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition (55: 908-915, 2001), found that cholesterol levels in young adults were dramatically lowered after spending a few weeks on a diet that exchanged saturated fat for polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats.

For the study, a group of 71 adults, ages 21 to 40, spent two-and-a-half weeks on a diet that included saturated fats, and then two-and-a-half weeks on a diet containing polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats. For all of the diets, the total proportion of dietary calories from fat was one-third. The saturated fat diet contained high amounts of dairy products and butter, the monounsaturated diet used foods such as olive oil and avoided dairy, and the polyunsaturated diet replaced butter with foods such as sunflower oil.

Participants were given recipes and guidebooks with suggestions on how to adjust their diet. At the beginning and end of the study, participants had their blood cholesterol measured.

When the cholesterol levels were compared from the three diets, participants on the polyunsaturated diet reduced their blood cholesterol by 19 percent, and those on the monounsaturated diet reduced their cholesterol levels by 12 percent. While on the monounsaturated and polyunsaturated diets, the amount of saturated fat consumed daily was reduced by 28 or 29 grams, respectively.

There’re a lot of strong, great benefits of generic prescription drugs. The medicines which are affordable at an internet drugstore are usually much cheaper than that are available in a local pharmaceutical establishment.

Acesulfame K is safe to use during pregnancy. It crosses the placenta, but has no adverse effects.

Saccharin
Saccharin, which is the sweetener in Sweet ?n Low, has been used for more than 100 years. It is not metabolized in the digestive system, but rather is excreted in urine.

Saccharin has been the subject of much debate over the years. Questions linger about whether saccharin may cause cancer in humans. After years of examination, the National Toxicology Program has de-listed saccharin from the roster of anticipated carcinogens. The National Cancer Institute agrees that normal levels of saccharin use in adults do not pose a public health concern.

Saccharin has been in use in more than 90 countries for almost a century without evidence of causing cancer. Until recently, saccharin had been listed as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen” since 1981. The Calorie Control Council nominated saccharin for de-listing, which led to a new review of the carcinogenicity data for saccharin. The basis for this listing was sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals. Saccharin was removed from the report after this extensive review determined that the observed bladder tumors in rats arose from a mechanism that is not relevant to humans.

Dr. Kenneth Olden, director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Toxicology Program, said, “Two decades ago, when saccharin was shown to produce bladder tumors in rats, it was a prudent, protective step to consider the sweetener to be a likely human carcinogen. However, our understanding of the science has advanced and allows us to make finer distinctions today. Studies now indicate that the rat bladder tumors arise from mechanisms that are not relevant to the human situation. In addition, we have decades more data from observations of humans using saccharin that adds to our confidence. In other words, with better science we can now make a better call.”

Saccharin is still not recommended during pregnancy because of unknown effects.

Sucralose
Sucralose, sold under the brand name Splenda, is actually made from sugar. It is not metabolized by the body and passes through intact. Long-term consumption of this product is safe, according to the FDA. It has been tested for more than 20 years in 110 studies. It is also shown to have no adverse affects in pregnant women.

Sucralose can replace sugar in cooking and baking recipes such as brownies, cookies and cakes. Because of it is made from sugar, it doesn?t break
down when heated.

Stevia
Stevia, although used by many as a sweetener, is a dietary supplement that has not been evaluated or approved for safety by the FDA. It is 300 times as sweet as sugar. This natural sweetener is extracted from the Stevia rebaudiana plant. Because it is offered as a dietary supplement, the product cannot be advertised as a sweetener because it has not passed FDA testing. The public is not protected by extensive research when using this product, but it is generally regarded as safe.

As food scientists explore other proposed sweeteners, the FDA is challenged to protect the public’s health by carefully testing and monitoring these new entries into our food supply. Consumers can read about the research and examine food labels to make their own choices.

Why are Americans struggling with increased obesity? The plain facts have to do with increased calorie intake and decreased energy expenditure. The proverbial sweet tooth has challenged the food industry to develop noncaloric sweeteners for use in foods and drinks. These sweeteners taste similar to sucrose and contain very few calories. Because they are hundreds of times sweeter than sugar, only a small amount is necessary. It adds only a few calories to foods and beverages such as diet soft drinks, light yogurt and sugar-free pudding. Americans consume an average of 20 teaspoons of sugar a day, and these sweeteners can replace some of those empty calories.

Not only do these sweeteners save calories, they are appropriate for diabetics because they do not raise blood sugar levels. They are also non-fermentable, so they don?t promote dental cavities.

The big question is which one to chose.

Aspartame
Aspartame, sold under the brand names Equal and NutraSweet, has been tested over 10 years and has proven to have no adverse effects in more than 100 studies, according to the Food and Drug Administration. It has been cleared for use even during pregnancy, except for use by women with phenylketonuria, or PKU.

It is made from methyl ester of amino acids phenylalanine and aspartic acid. These are found naturally in foods and the digestive system metabolizes them like protein. As with many artificial sweeteners, some report an unpleasant aftertaste. Aspartame is not good for use in baking or hot drinks because it loses its sweetness when heated.

There is a warning label on products containing aspartame stating that people with PKU should not use the sweetener.

Aspartame has been the subject of Internet scares, linking it to brain tumors and other disorders. The FDA continues to monitor the safety of aspartame, and both the American Medical Association and FDA stand by its safety. The rise in brains tumors, as tracked by the National Cancer Institute, occurred before the approval of aspartame, and in recent years has actually decreased.

Another claim is that aspartame produces methanol, a toxic substance in high doses. David Hattan, Ph.D., acting director of the FDA, confirms that minor amounts of methanol are produced, but much less than other food substances such as citrus juice and tomatoes. Aspartame cannot cause brain damage in people without PKU, and the presence of PKU is known from birth. Approximately 16,000 people with PKU are sensitive to phenylalanine, which is an essential amino acid present in food.

Still, some healthy individuals report sensitivity to aspartame, such as mild headaches or aftertaste. Aspartame is a natural food substance that we consume whenever we eat starches or proteins.

Acesulfame K
This tabletop sweetener, found in Sunett and Sweet One, is found in many food products. It was approved in 1988 and has been tested for safety in more than 90 studies, according to the FDA. It is considered an organic salt and is derived acetic acid or vinegar. It is not broken down by the body, is excreted through the digestive system intact.

The severity of a child’s asthma and his/her overall health will greatly influence the prescribed asthma management plan. A child may have to undergo additional testing to evaluate the severity of the disease and rule out other possible diagnoses that have similar symptoms.

Preventative measures must be taken because of a child’s increased risk for developing asthma and other obstructive airway diseases. Children’s respiratory systems have multiple differences from the adult systems that predispose children to asthma. They have narrow airways and decreased amounts of muscle resulting in less support in the respiratory system.

Heredity
Heredity is a major determinant for children developing asthma. Children with one asthmatic parent have a 25 percent risk of becoming asthmatic themselves; if both parents have had the disease, the risk for the child to develop asthma increases to 50 percent. African American children and the urban poor are at increased risk. Environmental factors such as poor living conditions, a history of low birth weight, maternal smoking, a large family size, crowded living conditions, frequent infections and severe allergies as an infant are also risk factors. It is incumbent on families and physicians to be alert for the possibility of introducing potentially life-threatening circumstances to a child’s relatively vulnerable airways.

Children with asthma also incur increased risk for developing obesity. Reduced exercise endurance and exposure to the side effects of oral steroids increase the probability of weight gain and poor physical performance.

This does not only produce serious physical risk to children, but has significant emotional consequences because of the impact obesity may have on self-esteem.
