  • Empty Nest Can Be the Best Time of Your Life

Midlife is the period of time between the ages of 35 to 65 years with 40 to 60 years old being the core. During this period of time, many things happen in our lives. It is common for our youngest child to leave home and go off to college. This leaves the household that has always been occupied by the pitter-patter of other feet empty for the first time ever! We, the adult parents that are left behind, go through many changes that sometimes include loneliness, and even depression. It is not uncommon to feel a sense of loss.

The truth of the matter is that you can take what seems like the worst time in your life and make it the best! You can do all of the things you have always wanted to do but never had the time. You can have the time of your life.

This can be viewed as a positive time by all of us parents if we direct our energy away from the empty house and focus on each other. We can use this time to rekindle our relationship and once again return to the time when we only had each other. This can be considered the beginning of the rest of our lives. It may be necessary for us to find avenues to occupy our time and enjoy the company of our significant other.

Enjoying a sport or exercise program together is an excellent way to renew the playful times of our lives. You may need to find a sport or exercise routine you can both enjoy. Going to the gym together will enable you to spend time together and work on your own self-image. My husband runs four days a week and when he runs, I ride my bicycle beside him as we talk and enjoy the outdoors. I know I couldn’t possibly keep up with his running, but riding the bicycle enables us to spend this time together. If you use your imagination, there is a multitude of things you can do to enjoy your time together.

Travel is a rewarding way to spend time together and to enjoy some of the finer things in life we previously didn’t have adequate time to notice. If there is a place you both have always wanted to go, plan the trip as soon as you can. Maybe an Alaska cruise, a much wanted Hawaii vacation, springtime in Paris when the flowers are in bloom. The world is your possibility. You could even make the trip a second honeymoon! What a romantic way to get to know each other again.

Maybe it’s the right time to take up a new hobby. The responsibilities of a family may have left precious little time to do those things you really want to do.

So what’s stopping you? Get up and get active. Do wonderful things together. You will be glad you did.
